Dental Upholstery Cleaning and Maintenance

The importance of maintaining the upholstery on your dental patient chair and operator stools is more than obvious. Here are a few quick care and cleaning tips, plus links for more in depth information from our upholstery manufacturers.

Normal Care and Cleaning

Almost all upholstery as well as chair base assemblies should be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution – usually 10% dish or general purpose detergent. Use a soft cloth or towel to apply and dry with a lint-free cloth or towel.

Special Cleaning Problems

Boltaflex and Naugahyde can be cleaned and disinfected with a 10% diluted household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) solution (1:9 bleach to water ratio).  Boltaflex also recommends Formula 409 or Fantastic non-abrasive all purpose cleaners.

Rinse and Dry

Following cleaning and disinfection with bleach, rinse cleaned area with fresh water then dry with a clean lint-free cloth. Many practices use anti-bacterial cleaners on upholstery throughout the day and never wash these off. This practice over time wears away the protective coating of the upholstery. Discoloration and premature wear or cracking not only looks bad, but becomes much more difficult to clean and disinfect.
