Reducing infection and exposure risks is essential for all dental practices. As a result, the American Dental Association (ADA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed protocols for cleaning and sterilizing instruments to stem the spread of bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms.

This process starts with using a pre-cleaning method such as an ultrasonic cleaner to dislodge particles from tools. Then, all tools and instruments are disinfected and sterilized, which may entail a steam, dry heat or chemical vapor procedure.

Learn more about what ultrasonic cleaners do and how they fit into this process.

What Is an Ultrasonic Cleaner?

Also called a “US cleaner,” ultrasonic cleaners mark the first step of preventing the spread of bacteria and debris in your dental practice.

Considered a pre-cleaning device, ultrasonic cleaners transmit ultrasonic waves of varying frequency (typically 20 to 400 Khz) toward any tools and instruments inserted. The cleaner, meanwhile, holds a detergent, which starts to bubble and foam as the waves are generated. As the bubbles burst, the chemical bond causing debris and microorganisms to cling to the surface of the tools and instruments gets broken, causing these particles to detach.

As a secondary measure, ultrasonic cleaners may use a proteolytic enzyme solution for a deeper level of clean.
