Covidien caprosyn synthetic absorbable suture's quick absorption (56 days), durable polymer material and monofilament construction provide smooth passage through tissue, better approximation or ligation and minimized potentiation of infection. Patients can experience less discomfort during healing, less wound complications and a faster recovery. Caprosyn suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological surgery, microsurgery or ophthalmic surgery. Caprosyn monofilament synthetic absorbable suture is prepared from polyglytone 6211 synthetic polyester which is composed of glycolide, caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate and lactide. This suture, being absorbable, should not be used where extended approximation of tissue is required. Caprosyn synthetic absorbable suture elicit a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, which is followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. Progressive loss of tensile strength and eventual absorption of caprosyn synthetic absorbable suture occurs by means of hydrolysis. Absorption begins as a loss of tensile strength followed by a loss of mass. Subcutaneous tissue implantation studies in animals indicate that caprosyn synthetic absorbable suture retain a minimum of 50 - 60% USP and EP knot strength at 5 days post-implantation and a minimum of 20 - 30% of USP and EP knot strength at 10 days post-implantation. All of the original tensile strength is essentially lost by 21 days post-implantation.
